Hi!
| So you think you can't teach an old dog... ? |
 |

'For decades we have thought that the
cognitive capacity of our brains is
genetically determined, whereas it's now
clear that it's a lifestyle choice. What we
eat and drink, how we learn at school and
what type of moods we have are all crucial,'
says David Horne, a business lecturer at the
University of Central Lancaster, and
authority on thinking and learning.
'Teach Yourself Training Your Brain' gives a
wide range of suggestions, including cuddling
a baby, cheating at school, reading out loud
and doing your university degree in business
studies. Co-authors Terry Horne and Simon
Wootton say their recommendations are based
on and backed by the latest research by
leading experts around the world.
'People can make lifestyle choices that will
not only prevent what used to be seen as an
inevitable decline in cognitive [ability]
after the age of 17 - something that IQ tests
seemed to bear out - but will constantly
increase our cognitive capacity throughout
our adult lives. Our far-reaching suggestions
will empower people to develop their
cognitive capacity or just let it decline.'

How To Get
Testimonials
Whatever business you are in, one of the best assets you can build is a
databank of testimonials from satisfied clients and customers. But exactly how
do you get those rave reviews that you can use to attract more
clients? Here are my 6 top tips for collecting and using effective
testimonials.
1. Deliver a great product or
service
I know it's stating the obvious, but the first step in
getting testimonials is to have satisfied customers and clients. That means you
need to make sure you have delivered on your promises and at least met, if not
exceeded, your customers' expectations. Don't try to collect any testimonials
until you have met this criteria!
2. Ask!
The big
secret of getting testimonials is no big secret at all. You've simply got to
ask. If you've been in business for any length of time at all, you probably
already have satisfied customers who would be more than willing
to give you an endorsement, if only you ASK them. I understand that you might be
self-conscious about asking, so why not send a note or email along these
lines.
'Can I ask a quick favour? I'm in the process of updating my
marketing materials and want to include examples of people I have worked with
and how I've helped them. I would love to include you. Would you be willing to
jot a couple of lines about how my (service/product) helped you? I'm planning to
get this completed in the next two weeks, so if you could reply by (deadline) it
would really help. Thanks in anticipation!'
There, now that wasn't
so difficult was it? Try it. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the responses you
get!
3. Use full contact details
Have you ever
seen those testimonials that are signed by someone like 'J.V,
Leicester'. Do you believe them? I don't. They scream 'made up!'
Testimonials simply aren't worthwhile unless accompanied by full contact
details: name, company, location, age, profession. Include as much relevant info
as you need to prove that the testimonial was provided by a real
person.
4. Use examples of your target
audience
If you're targeting single 20 somethings, then it
doesn't make sense to include a testimonial from a 50 year old married woman.
The unspoken question many of your prospects have in their head is 'Will this
work for me?', so they want to see case studies and examples from people who
started out in a similar situation. Adapt your testimonials to make them
relevant to your target audience eg if you are targeting working mothers include
information like, 'Sarah Smith, mother of 3'.
5. Make your
testimonials more believable with photos, voice and/or
video
We've all seen the 'testimonials' on tv that are actually
paid actors, so it's not surprising that many of your prospects are jaded and
sceptical. You can make your testimonials more believable by using proof in the
shape of photos, actual voice recordings of the testimonials and even video
testimonials if you can get them. Audio
Generator includes a feature for easily collecting voice testimonials from
your customers. They provide you with a phone number, the client calls to record
their message, then you get a simple code for uploading the audio to your
website.
6. Have a system for soliciting
testimonials
I know you've already got too much on your 'to do'
list, and the last thing I want to do is create more work for you. The key to
getting anything done in marketing is to put a system in place that automates
the process. For example, send a form letter or email a specific number of days
after the service, treatment or goods have been received verifying that your
client is happy and asking them to provide you with their comments.
Some
of the best testimonials I got for my first e-book came from a standard email I
sent to every customer 14 days after they ordered the product. I just set the
email up on my auto-responder so I didn't have to think about it. It generated a
steady stream of testimonials with no further action required on my
part.
The bottom line is that adding testimonials is one of the most
effective changes you can make to your marketing materials, so make sure you
start collecting and using testimonials, starting today!

Hi!
Well, we have a nice surprise for you next
month - Judy Rees, director and specialist
in 'Clean Language' training and consulting,
has taken up my invitation to come along and
present to in an open workshop on Wed eve, 3
Oct.
Judy presented at the conference 'NLP by the
Sea' in Bournemouth, and participants tested
out a
fascinating approach to solving problems and
enhancing personal capabilities, with an
elegant and powerful concise questioning and
exploring format.
Now you can discover it for yourself. Find

here.
| Plain and simple self-development |

Clean Language is causing a buzz in the world
of change work, as one of the most
sophisticated interventions to emerge in
recent years. According to Judy, 'This
approach works
elegantly in a massive range of
situations:
- with individuals and with groups
- in corporate work or in personal,
therapeutic contexts
- to model excellence or to facilitate change
- to heal the past, or to generate even
better results for the future.
Judy explains, 'Clean accesses and uses the
unique, individual metaphors which underpin a
person's unconscious wisdom, promoting
powerful, rapid and ecological change. That
means that changes tend to stay changed!
'
'By its nature, it's tailored to the needs of
the individual, because the process is
designed to cut out presuppositions,
suggestions and assumptions and to respect
the integrity of the client's system. And
that makes a facilitator's life easy - you
can sit back and feel truly confident in your
ability to deliver, even in new and tricky
situations.'
Judy, the 'online voice of Clean', works
alongside the leaders in this field to spread
the word about this beyond its home ground in
psychotherapy and into businesses and
communities worldwide, to 'change the way we
think about the way we think'. A former media
executive and news journalist, she is now a
director of specialist Clean Language
training and consulting firm, Clean Change
Company.
In this free event, you will begin you'll begin
your own Clean Language adventure. You'll
experience the unfolding of one of your own
powerful metaphors, to enhance and develop
your specific skills.

Thinking yourself sick
Sometimes we expect medical treatment to
work - and maybe that's partly why it does
(the 'placebo effect'). But the reverse or
'nocebo' effect can occur, where symptoms
worsen, side effects are exacerbated and
drugs are rendered less effective. In other
words, you're as bad as you think - or
'expectation of sickness begets sickness' - more.
Are women more emotional?
Women do seem to cry more readily than men,
but is that because they are less able to
control their emotions? Brain scans show men
seem to 'out-think' their and 'outweigh'
emotion-associated activation - more.
Depression 'is worse for your health than
asthma or diabetes' This WHO study says
"doctors treating long-term chronic diseases,
tend to focus mainly on the physical diseases
- they are not looking for depression.Yet
it's a much more effective way to improve
people's health than just dealing with
chronic physical illness. Treatment of mental
illness is a necessity, not a luxury." -more.
Simple Techniques for Happiness
Marty Seligman and others identify two
techniques as being particularly effective
for long term (six months) happiness: (1)
Three good things in life: write down three
things that went well each day and their
causes, every night for one week. (2)
Character ('signature') strengths: take the
online inventory of character strengths and
then to use one of these top strengths in a
new and different way every day for one week
- more.

Hi!
You know the old saying - no-one ever looks back on
life and says 'I wish I'd spent more time at the office'.
You see, life is a happiness thing. Anything else is
just a bad dream. I have worked with
many hundreds of people, and had the opportunity to
figure out what makes them tick. It seems to me that
underneath it all,
behind any complaint, problem or motivational crisis -
even 'stuck businesses'.. is some unhelpful world
view
or perspective.
| Happiness in the modern world |
 |
|
"The Treasurer, Peter Costello, today announced
that Australia's ranking on the
Gross National Happiness index rose by 0.3 points
during 2010. Mr Costello said that
the rise was due to strong pro-happiness policies
pursued by the Coalition
government. He warned that Labour's policies would
jeopardise the happiness gains of
the past decade, leading to a sadder Australia."
The concept of 'Gross National Happiness' has been
creeping into the agenda in Australia for some time.
It's even on the UK Govt's minds, with senior Advisor
Lord Layard, of the LSE, advising happiness
lessons at
school! (That turns even me a bit pale, I have to say!)
Can we measure happiness? Should we
care? Existing surveys have posed
fascinating
findings. One
global survey
has Australia near the top and UK lower than you
might have expected. Another study published in New Scientist magazine
suggests that the happiest people in the world live in
Nigeria - and the least happy, in Romania. People in
Latin America, Western Europe and North America are
happier than their counterparts in Eastern Europe and
Russia. Now, whilst I'd agree that such surveys are
imperfect, I do think we might ask
ourselves, 'What's going on? What really makes us
happy?
Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert says
that Americans do a tremendous amount
of "miswanting" - wanting things that will never make
us happy. Studies show that having enough money for
the basic necessities of life - food, clothing, and
shelter, which cost maybe $40,000 a year - is all we
really need for happiness. The effect of the next $10
million is negligible.
The truth is that we usually don't know what will make
us happy. Worse, we don't know that we don't know,
so we ardently pursue the wrong things.
Well, I've got my own ideas too, based on experience
of working with clients over some ten years. I have
pulled them together into a concept that I call, 'The
Physics
of Happiness and Fulfilment'.
|
| Physics of Happiness & Fulfilment |
 |
|
We might say that we really want something - but so
often we ignore the change that needs to come
with it. So what really motivates us? Ultimately, it's
when the payoff is better than the current 'pain'. Even
so, we tend to make
excuses. In my experience, there are only three
issues that can spoil your motivation:
- you really do feel you know what you want, but you
have self-doubt in the way
- you are not doing what you really enjoy, but your
head tells you that 'you should stick with it'
- you have never considered following what you feel,
or never felt it.
Consider this though: if you make all your important
decisions with your 'head' - ie based
on 'logic', then the best life will be is 'satisfying' - or 'not
bad'. On the other hand, if you make important
decisions based on how you feel, then you will create
a life that 'feels good'! Now that's logical.
You
might argue that that's fine and nice, but what about
the
'real world' you live in? Now, it seems to me that we all
have an idea of what the real world is like, how it
works, what's possible and what's not, what people
are like etc. But it differs enormously from one
person to the next. So where is this 'real world'? Who
sees it? To all intents and purposes, we cannot see
beyond our perceptions, or 'beliefs'.
So my
concept is based on motivation, feeling, self-belief,
and perceptions of what's possible and what it's
like 'out there'. Change these, and your world changes
with them.
Last, but not least, you need to know your 'purpose'.
Everything has a purpose - what happens if you use
something for
what it was not designed for? Right! - it doesn't work
so well!
Same applies to you; I mean, you'll get by - even very
well maybe - but you won't achieve lasting happiness
or fulfilment.
These then, are the keys to happiness, well-being and
fulfilment. And we have the tools and
techniques to use them - it's what I do.
Want to discover more? Then join my 1/2 day
workshop, 'Discover the
Secrets of
Motivation, Happiness and Fulfilment' . Fri 21

could be the first step to the next level in
life. <more>

It really is a happiness thing
|
|
|
|
Studies of successful people
seem to say that happiness comes first, and
success
follows - not the other way round.
Ultimately, if you believe that
anything
is
possible, that you are capable of anything, and that
you are
fine in
any event, even when things go wrong, then you get to
be happy, fulfilled and remain in good health.
So this edition is about happiness.
By the
way, I
presented my ideas on the Physics of Happiness
at an NLP conference last month at Regents College.
Their
web site reports, 'It had
been a full day with a lot of
information so for the last session Richard Walker
tore up his notes and, instead of explaining the
physics of
happiness he gave us a riotous half an hour inducing
it. A great end to the day.'
Word seems to have spread
quickly, and I have been invited to present my ideas in
more depth at the conference 'nlp by the
sea' at Bournemouth in August. This is a fun
evernt place for anyone to learn about NLP and a lot
more - come along!
In response to this, I am developing new courses,
like the 1/2 day event (21 Sep)
'Discover the Secrtets of Motivation, Happiness
and Fulfilment', in
addition to my well-established 'Keys to Personal
Power
and Fulfilment' (next event 1 & 2 Dec).
How would you like to
discover how happy are business people in your
region? I am proposing a small scale survey of my
own. Contact me and register your interest now! Or to
chat about courses or how one-to-one work may help.

Hi!
I don't know about you, but I like other people finding
out things for me.
Especially if I can put it to some practical use. Well,
wouldn't you agree that the art (or science?) of getting
an outcome, even from apparently unpromising
starting points, is worth reading about? After all, we
have to 'negotiate' whether at home with the kids, our
partners, colleagues, clients, even students! 'Telling'
or giving orders or instructions simply doesn't work
often enough, does it? So I've outline the tips that
come from using NLP in negotiation.
| 15 Tips for Negotiating with Power |
 |
|
Because I know you're busy people, I'll keep these
nice and concise. Here are the tactics that come from
applying NLP (neuro linguistic programming) to the
science of negotiation:
Planning: decide your desired or best option
outcome and develop as many options as possible to
achieve that outcome
Do not respond to a proposal with a
counter proposal; this will most likely result in a game
of 'attack' and 'defence' and will lead nowhere
Invent options for mutual gain, ie.
win/win; dovetail your and their outcomes
Avoid attack/defence exchanges; they will
wear you out and do not result in progress
'Anchor' any and every state you can use
later; anchoring is an NLP technique of setting
up 'conditioned responses'
Avoid 'irritators' - subjective judgments
and statements which glorify the options you favour
e.g., "I can't believe you're make such a ridiculous
offer/ saying such a stupid thing"
Separate intent from behaviour, by
asking "for what purpose do you want [to do
that]?" / "what are you trying to achieve by doing that?"
highlight and distinguish suggestions and
questions: "Let me offer a suggestion"; "I'd like to ask
a question"
Use 'I' language rather than accusing: "I'm having
trouble understanding this," rather than, "You're not
making yourself clear"
State your reasons first before making a proposal.
Anticipate objections beforehand, and plan how to
handle them in advance; ask others for ideas if you
are stuck!
be flexible in your own approach; those who are
willing to adopt the widest range of behaviour will
always end up in control (Law of Requisite Variety)
Minimize the reasons you give when
stating an opinion; otherwise you risk being
contradicted and 'undone' on some minor point
Test understanding and summarise
Tell the other person/group your feelings
Don't negotiate with yourself in front of the other
person/group; if an option is raised and you need
more time or information, ask for a break or schedule
another session.

Of course, any set of concise tips like this will prompt
as many questions as it answers. Feel free to call me
and ask!
Some of you will want to know how
to learn to implement these techniques, and that's
fine. I teach them in workshops as short as half a day,

Good Sex Is Not a Rat Race For years the
story on rat sex has been this: the male
seeks above all else to ejaculate quickly, and once he
has done it with one female, he is eager to move on to
new partners. The female, meanwhile, seeks to
extend the sex encounter through 'pacing.' A new study
finds that if pacing is slow enough, the male will prefer
that familiar partner to someone new. The wait, it
seems, makes the female more attractive.
"It's an awful lot like what we were taught in high
school," the researchers say.

largely come from the same gene pool as Europeans.
Indeed, the World Health Organisation study of mental
illness, strongly implies that genes play little or no part
in explaining national differences in mental illness,
and that among developed nations economic
inequality is highly significant. Selfish capitalism
causes mental illness by spawning materialism, or,
as Oliver James puts it, the affluenza virus - placing a
high value on
money, possessions, appearances (social and
physical) and fame. English-speaking nations are
more infected with the virus than mainland western
European ones. [read more]
Boredom comes from not knowing ourselves
Research suggests boredom has little to do with
lack
of external stimulation and everything to do with being
out of touch with our emotions.
In a survey, students who said they suffered from
more boredom also tended to report difficulty
identifying their emotions and being externally
focused. The researchers say this shows our natural
tendency to seek outside stimulations and
distractions when we’re bored is the wrong solution.
“Like the trap of quicksand, such thrashing only
serves to strengthen the grip of boredom by further
alienating us from our desire and passion, which
provide compass points for satisfying engagement
with life”, they said. Instead the researchers suggest
treating boredom as an opportunity to “discover the
possibility and content of one’s desires”. [read more]
Attraction is about jealousy? It seems beauty
isn’t all in the eye of the beholder after
all. Researchers have shown women rate a man as
more attractive after they’ve seen another woman
smiling at him. By contrast, being a jealous bunch,
male observers rate a man as less attractive after
they’ve seen a woman smiling at him. [read more]
You've got to laugh.. or else Forget salary,
location, prospects - happiness is the new weapon in
the drive to recruit the best and brightest new workers.
The workers at Fruit Towers in west London are on a
mission - to get the world drinking their tasty
smoothies, and to have fun doing so. Fruit Towers is
the quirkily named headquarters of Innocent Drinks,
one of a string of fast-growing companies that sell
themselves as happy-go-lucky and people-orientated.
Google is another. So too is Orange - especially now
its "togetherness" ads are fronted by a pair of smiling

It's no joke "At least a third of British workers
claim to be bored at work for most of the day and it's
affecting jobs you would never expect to be dull, such
as teaching, marketing, the law and management,"
says Sandi Mann, this study's author. "Boredom is the
second most commonly suppressed emotion at
work." [read more]

Things look like they are changing. Not all change is
comfortable, but some of us find it difficult to ask for
what we want. Yet we all have to 'negotiate' whether at
home with the kids, our
partners, colleagues, clients, even students! I've
outlined the tips that
come from using the power of NLP in negotiation.
And, as
promised last time, I have some interesting news
snippets for you about what people think makes us
tick... .

Hi!
You may yet have noticed how many people are now
using Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
techniques to upgrade their performance or to create
a better experience of life.
What is NLP? Well, the simple explanation is that it's
about using words to 'reprogramme' our nervous
system to perform better. But for my money, I prefer
the bigger definition: 'an attitude and a methodology
that underpins a series of change-techniques.' The
attitude and methodology are so important; an attitude
of curiosity, and a method of modelling excellent
behaviour. That's why you want to work with someone
inspiring in their teaching style - and who loves NLP!

Hi!
I am writing to you to give you something for free
-
no strings attached! I had a lot of interest in my last newsletter,
which mentioned my workshop on making contact with instant impact and
confidence. It seems I touched a nerve, with requests to know more - so
I’m giving away the key information! Read on if this sounds like
something you could use.
| What’s all the fuss? |
 |
|
Think of it! If there's anything that you
want to get, or if there's anything you need, then you will probably
need someone's help in getting it. This is true whether you're a
salesperson, a teacher or a builder. No matter what you do, the ability
to develop and maintain rapport with many people of varying backgrounds
will allow you to get what you want. For whatever good reason, you do
want what you want, don’t you? Having rapport with someone will
allow you to do get it. So, you could argue that rapport is probably
the most important skill of all!
That being said, do you know that feeling when you just can’t
seem to connect to someone? You just seem to be off on the wrong foot?
Help comes from NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), the leading edge science of communicating, and understanding and creating desired behaviour.
Read on to find out how and get my free guide!

| Are you willing to do what it takes? |
 |
|
So you’ve psyched yourself up to
approach a new ‘prospect’. You’ve worked out your
patter, and off you go, all fired up. Unnerved by their initial
surprise, you press ahead. You then become unnerved as you see their
eyes glaze over within a minute or so, despite your obvious enthusiasm
and charisma. Surely they can’t be bored yet? What went wrong?
Now, whilst confidence is a good thing, the first mistake we often
make, in our enthusiasm to tell someone about our wonderful selves,
ideas, or business services, is to assume that others should listen to
what we have to say! – And if they don’t, well maybe they
weren’t good prospects after all, and we write them off.
That’s a pity. Because, if only you knew a few of the tips below,
you might have got a totally different response. But are you wiling to
do what it takes? If you are not, then don’t bother downloading my free nine - page guide (instructions below), nor how learn new behaviours in just one morning at my workshop on Instant Rapport (booking info). But if you want to know more, please read on.
|
| Rapport is a process you can do! |
 |
|
There’s a lot of loose talk about what
rapport means. Let me define it this way: it is a state of
‘connection’ between individuals whereby they become
suggestible to ideas exchanged between them. How about that -
suggestible to your ideas! Does that interest you? Wouldn’t that
be pretty useful?
It’s been shown over and over that people tend to
‘buy’ from people they like. Furthermore, people tend to
like people like themselves. But what if you find you are attempting
communication with someone who, in fact, is not ‘like you’?
You know, when you get that feeling of not connecting, possibly even
downright discomfort – and you both know! How do you overcome the
problem? Essentially, the solution is based on the concepts that
someone who observes you behaving like them, will tend to like you. You
can appear to be ‘like someone’ if you unobtrusively match
or mirror what they do, including how they use their voice, and even
the form of words that they use. Want to know how it works - for free?

Some of you will have attended a recent presentation on networking, at the St Albans Chamber of Commerce.
It got some of you thinking; some of you also saw my recent newsletter
which referred briefly to my half-day workshop on making contact with
instant impact and confidence. And, some of you recognised a valuable
connection between the two!
That is, that many of us don’t think we know how to approach people and get a good reception.

One of my favourite business advisors
is Bernadette Doyle of Client Magnets. Recently she asked this
question, 'Imagine you are being offered two marketing opportunities.
Option 1 is the chance of a positive front page news story on a
national newspaper that will be read by millions of people first thing
tomorrow morning. Option 2 is permission to communicate on an ongoing
basis with 1,000 people who know, like and trust you.
Which would you choose?

People tend to buy from people they
like. And people like people like themselves. So what do you do if you
want to persuade someone of something, when you are not like them? And
add to that, you have a minute or less to make your mark.
Hopeless? Not so - help is at hand. Learn to 'be' like others in this
morning workshop. Discover how you can quickly create suggestibility to
your message. Particularly for following up leads by phone!
Essential for anyone who requires to get through to people quickly and
get their message across! Sat 2 December.

Have you got a health problem
that’s not getting better, or keeps coming back? Interested
to discover what you can do to encourage your own healing?
If you answered yes, but you are unsure about the idea of the mind
affecting your body, and whether 'complementary therapies' really work,
then why not take this unique opportunity to join a small medically
monitored pilot study? More
details
You will participate in four weekly workshops, using recognised leading
edge NLP
(Neurolinguistic Programming) techniques to help you to explore your
health in a new way, and encourage your body’s natural
healing ability.
After all, if something’s not working, surely it make sense
to try something else?
Interested? Call me on 01582 768830 or email richard@abetterlife-uk.com
to register your interest now.
I am collaborating with Olive
Hickmolt, an experienced NLP health therapist, and with GPs,
to assess the results. We can then share the results to promote the
effectiveness of the techniques both to GPs and the public.
The reduced participation rate for the pilot study is £100
for the four 1/2 day workshops. More

| Successful marketing is an inside job! |
 |
|
Do these questions go through your mind?:
- Where are the best places to advertise?
- How do you identify the right prospects for your
business?
- How do you ‘get’ them
interested in what you have to offer?
- What should you put on your website? How much
should you charge?
Now these are all good questions, but they focus on
EXTERNAL issues. Bernadette Doyle, a successful business advisor at
www.clientmagmets.com, says ‘if I were only to focus on the
externals, then I would be doing you a disservice. You see, being a
Client Magnet is as much an ‘inside job’ as it is
an ‘outside job’. What does she mean?
Bernadette says, 'When I think about what’s really made the
difference, it's the shifts that I’ve made on the inside.
When I really started to recognize the value that I have to offer in
the marketplace is when things really took off for me.' I agree 100%,
